This may not sound like much of an adventure, but I’m just going to reminisce on my first day of volunteering at Sunflower Gardens Assisting Living Center. I was expecting a few elderly people here or there, wandering around or helping themselves to whatever they may please. Instead, I walked into a room filled with elderly. Most of them were incapable of walking, and only a few of them shuffled around in a daze or on a quest for something. The first elderly woman to approach me was Betty, nicknamed Betty Boop by the staff there. She was really kind, and talking to her while filling out my volunteer form was a nice change of scene. Eventually though, I learned from our conversation that she would not remember my name or where I came from unless I repeated myself and answered her questions about every several minutes. At first, I was confused. I came to my realization after several rounds of it. I asked about her family and where she came from, and even though I wasn’t able to make sense of some of it, I nodded and listened. I was asked later on to help some others play bingo. Needless to say, Betty is my most memorable senior there.
